PSHE
Intent
PSHE (Personal Social Health Emotional) and the new statutory RHSE (Relationships Health and Sex Education) framework is fundamentally enabling children to develop confidently and valuing who they are as they grow. The Jigsaw scheme of work, is a whole school, child centered and mindful approach to PSHE. In PSHE it is important that we teach children the skills to be able to value themselves and others, understand who they are and to develop the skills they need for life. PSHE is taught from Nursery to Year 6. The Jigsaw scheme does this through a spiral and progressive curriculum, allowing children to build upon the previous knowledge they have gained. Appropriate learning is taught to individual year groups. We know that there are lots of challenges that face our young children. We know that PSHE, as a subject, when taught will enable children to be aware of their own self being, their mental health and well being. As a result of recent statutory guidance, children will be taught about their own health and the relationships that they have. This will be integrated through Jigsaw lessons and stand-alone lessons where applicable. This meets the requirement set out by the Education Act (2002) that we provide a broad and balanced curriculum.
Impact
By the time children leave Priory Primary School they will:
- Have an excellent knowledge of the following areas that are covered by The Jigsaw Scheme -
Being Me In My World, Celebrating Differences, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me.
- Build upon the learning as they progress through each individual year group.
- Understand the importance of PSHE in their everyday life and how this can enable them to make sensible and well informed choices.
- Be aware of their own mental health and how to overcome barriers and seek help.
- Understand their own self worth and the importance of this.
- Be able to articulate their own thoughts, opinions and experiences with respect for themselves and others.
- Have the ability to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current and contemporary issues in society.
- Have a passion for and commitment to the subject, and a real sense of curiosity to find out about how they can continually help themselves and others.
- Achieve high standards in all areas of the curriculum that are underpinned by valuable experiences.
- In RHSE know the importance of themselves as individuals and in a relationship.
- Know their own self worth.
- Know how and where to seek help and support when needed and not be afraid to do so.
- Know how to stay safe and what to do (appropriately) if they become ill or injured.
- Know that our bodies are private to us but we need to know the correct anatomical names of parts of our bodies in order to keep us safe.
- Know that we have a say in what happens to our bodies and who to talk to if we don’t like what is happening.
- Understand that the sexual element of RSHE is taught appropriately and is there to keep us safe and informed about how relationships develop as we get older
